Fillings/Restorations

Restorations are one of the most common procedures we carry out in general dentistry; it’s how we treat dental decay and cavities. Decay generally starts as a small white spot on the surface of the tooth, most of the time being asymptomatic. If left untreated, decay can burrow further into the tooth which will cause a hole or cavity. These cavities tend to become sensitive to cold and sweet which is a warning sign that it needs to be treated as soon as possible.

What causes decay?

Tooth decay is characterized by the gradual breakdown of the hard tissues within the mouth (enamel and dentin) due to result of bacteria that produce acid.
There are multiple factors that can cause decay, namely diet and oral hygiene. A poor diet consisting of high sugars can cause decay by feeding the bacteria that can cause decay. Poor oral hygiene allows the bacteria that eat sugars to sit on your teeth for too long. It is important to keep up to date with 6 monthly check ups so that our highly trained dentists can detect any decay before it becomes problematic.
