Fissure Sealants

Fissure Sealants are a minimally invasive, preventative dental procedure that can assist in the protection of newly erupted teeth. Fissure Sealants are generally placed on newly erupted molars (6 year old or 12 year old molars), or sometimes on teeth that have very deep grooves where a toothbrush may not be able to efficiently clean.

Most decay in kids and teenagers occurs on the biting surface of a tooth first. These grooves or fissures are prone to decay because they can be quite deep or have many narrow grooves which allow stagnation of bacteria and food debris. Sealants are a thin, protective layer of resin that fills in all of these gaps or fissures on the biting surface of a tooth. By sealing the tooth, it creates a smoother and shallower surface which makes it easier for kids to brush and keep clean.

Fissure sealants are a preventative measure and are cost-effective in comparison to fillings which are reactive (generally performed once decay as formed) which can sometimes be costly. Sealants are pain free and quick to place which makes it a great option for kids. These sealants are designed to stay in place for approximately 5 years after which they will fall off. They can be easily replaced, if necessary or left off if oral hygiene is adequate.
